с этим словом обычно ассоциируется что-то крайнее, сильное, жесткое и суровое. Именно в этом смысле говорят hard rock. Для освоения неформальной лексики мы бы порекомендовали русскому зрителю очень умело сделанный, на удивление противный, и совершенно не случайно так названный американский детективный фильм "Hard". Но, во-первых, его так просто не достанешь, а во-вторых, боимся быть побитыми за такую рекомендацию. Этому полезному слову есть много применений.Hard up (to have a buzz on) — пьяный, под кайфом, под балдой (см. главу с аналогичным названием (Глава 8. Под балдой)).
Hardcore (to be...) — порнографический. Дословно - только существенное, именно то, что надо, без отступлений.

Hard-on (to have a...) — выражение не самоочевидное, поэтому поясним. Оно означает, говоря языком простым, "встал" (медики называют это "эрекция"). Синонимы - (*) boner, (*) to have a bone on, (*) to have a rod on.Тут сам собой напросился, по случаю этого физиологического объяснения, старый медицинский анекдот. Девушке достался вопрос о главном мужском органе на экзамене по анатомии. Отвечает: "Ну, он такой твердый, костистый, длина 25 см". Профессор комментирует: "Твердый - в вашем частном случае верно. Костистый - это вам показалось, а 25 см - просто повезло!"Hard stuff (harry, horse) — героин. Но:
Hard data — точные, надежные данные, "твердые факты" - очень популярное, совершенно приличное разговорное выражение.
